Historic Charm & Greenhouse Love | Old Town, Aarhus, Denmark

Old Town Aarhus, Den gamle By, Aarhus Denmark
I woke up to the most beautiful Summer day and decided to go on an adventure. With the idea of being “tourist in own town” I packed my camera and jumped on my bike. 10 minutes later I parked in front of The Old Town – an open-air town museum located in the Aarhus Botanical Gardens, in central Aarhus, Denmark.

In my time as a photographer I’ve taken many, many pictures in this location. Most often I’ve taken photos after opening hours or out of the tourist season, but today I wanted to experience the town in its full blown summer mood and challenge myself to take photos in strong sunlight.

The old town was packed with happy kids and excited tourist. The atmosphere was enchanting and I found myself not minding waiting for the right time to snap a photo.

When you take pictures at a tourist attraction you need to either arrive before the tourist early morning hours or be very patient and wait for the perfect moment. But when you slow down and take your time the right moment will often appear and you get to snap that picture your heart desires.

For me shooting in strong sunlight is both a fight and a thrill. A fight because the light changes fast, the highlights are strong and the shadows dark. I need to work fast and change the camera settings many, many times. A thrill because I love the vidid colors and the warm sunlight that appears on the images.

What I love the most about visiting the old town are all the beautiful details. Everywhere you look there’s something unique for your eyes to enjoy; garden design, stacks of terra-cotta pots, secret courtyards, adorable animals, vintage shopping, an old-fashion bakery, delicious food, handmade things and breathtaking old townhouses.

My favorite subjects to photograph in the old town is the greenhouse and all the beautiful plants and flowers, as you will see in the photos below.
