Today is the first day of the new year. 2013 is here!
The year has been amazing! I could not ask for more. My whole body is filled with gratitude! For the first time ever I´m writing a post about my year in review. For me personally this is an opportunity to look back at some highlights from 2012. I don´t take a good year for granted – I´ve tried the opposite. I guess we all have. I´ve learned a bunch from the hard times in my past and I´ve used those learning pills to create a better life.
I´ve finally managed to turned my back on situations, habits and people that puts me down, makes me sad or makes me feel insecure. I embrace love and love only! Every decision I make, I make with my heart. My intention with my life as a mother, as a photographer, wife, friend and blogger is to lift people up, to give my love and support without judging. I´ve stopped trying to please people. My life is on my terms now and that´s how I see 2012 when I look back – a year that was build on my terms, a year filled with love!
With the help of instagram pictures taken during 2012 I´m able to write this review. Instagram helps me remember
In january I fell head over hills in love with instagram. I´d been a user for several month but it was not until I managed to take some gorgeous iPhone pictures on my local beach that I truly saw the possibilities – and I was hooked! I even got Mr. DJ hooked, which means we are now 5 people in this family with a passion for photography. I also wrote a simple beginners guide to get started with instagram.
I turned 38 on January 20 (oh dear!) and my grandma turned 80 (bless her). The whole family got together to celebrate her and it was such a cosy evening! I remember how her eyes sparkled with happiness when we all sang her the birthday song – a moment to treasure!
I created my own studio at home – the worlds smallest studio as I call it. It´s full of studio light + vintages clothes and accessories. I can´t shoot full body in there but it works perfect for headshots and so I did a lot of beauty portraiture in January. Normally I only shoot with natural light – but I had to come up with a solution for the dark winter months which we have in Denmark. The little studio solution worked perfect as a rescue!
I traveled with my friend D to Store Restrup Castle, located in the north of Denmark. We where almost the only guests that stayed there and we had a lot of fun exploring all the rooms in this amazing place. Because it was extremely cold outside they owners had closed all the doors inside the castle, to keep the rooms warm. I remember how surprised I was every time I opened a new door, to a new breathtaking room – it was all so magical and I felt like a little princesse. See the pictures from this beautiful place here and here.
One morning in february I woke up to the smell of fresh coffee. Mr. Dj surprised me with a family getaway to Copenhagen and off we went with our three teens. We enjoyed the urban lifestyle and spend our time visiting Louisiana Art Museum, The Experimentarium, we indulged some delicious food + cupcakes and did some fantastic vintage shopping. Copenhagen is truly one of the best places the buy secondhand!
March & April 2012
My amazing daughter Camilla turned 15. As a mother it has been an emotionally year dealing with the fact that I have big kids now – they are even taller than me! They are so independent and strong – they don´t need me as much anymore. I have to let them blossom on their own terms, which means that they don´t always want mommy along on their journey – friends are important now and mommy is still great but in moderations…sigh…
I´m working a lot during this time. I have a fully booked calendar and 12 hours working days. I get to photograph some fantastic women – even a few men and boys. I also start developing my new advanced workshop, which now is a self study course called Create, Grow and Go Pro.
My oldest daughter Maja turns 19. She travels with me to Paris to help me with work. We celebrate her birthday at restaurant KONG overlooking the Parisian skyline. A wonderful evening to remember!
In Paris I photographed some wonderful women from all around the world. Everyone was extremely kind and great to work with. I felt so at home in Paris. Even though I´ve been in Paris many, many times, it was the first time I truly fell in love with the city.
I also got to photograph and work with a professional ballerina – a wonderful experience and a photographic challenge.
On our last day in Paris, we took the day off and that day turned out to be one of my happiest days in 2012. The weather was amazing, the first real summer day – the sun was out and shined on us with love. We spoiled ourself with a lunch in the most amazing rooftop restaurant with a mind-blowing view to the Eiffel Tower. After dinner we sailed for a few hours on the Seine, listening to Parisian music from the good old days. I remember feeling so much happiness inside my body I could explode – I´ll always treasure that day in my heart!
When I left Paris, a piece of my heart stayed there….I hope to go back again in 2013!
June is my favorite month to explore my own hometown Aarhus. As doll and boring the city can be during winter – it truly comes alive in june. My time was divided between going out with friends and family to enjoy the city and work-projects. (it´s Mr. dj with his newspaper in the picture above).
I decided to improve my business and marketing skills, so I joined B-school with Marie Forleo. Most of my Summer was spend studying and it resulted in my decision to build a new website and change my business name.
I said goodbye to my blogspot blog and invested in a wordpress blog. It took a lot of hard work to move all the posts and get the new blog up and running. I lost readers the first few months, but luckily people quickly discovered that I had moved the blog. I also said my farewell to my old business name Divas and Dreams – I felt the name limited my growth as an artist and business owner, so I decided to just use my own name instead.
Unfortunately I can´t change my facebook page name, so it will continue to be called divas and dreams – but other than that I have now changed all my other social media sites to Christina Greve.
I traveled to my favorite place to spend summer and relax, a small seaside town in the north of Denmark called Skagen – also called the land of light, because the light is so special, so white and clear. Lot´s of famous painters comes from this area. Skagen has some of the most amazing beaches in the world! It´s a surfers paradise and the waves are insane at times.
We stay in the same yellow house every time. The kids have friends with them and we get guests over for dinner during our stay – I just love the combo of beautiful nature, sea life and social gatherings around food and wine…ahhh…paradise!
The summer vacation ended and the kids went back to school. My daughter Camilla changed school to experience new challenges – both intellectually and socially. The change made her really happy!
August was a fully booked photoshoot month – high season for portrait work in my little business. Almost all sessions was done outside in the beautiful weather and I enjoyed every minute of it!
My son Marco started to work as my assistant on some jobs. With his 13 years he is not one to underestimate – he learned me everything I know about videography!
My daughter Maja´s career was blooming. As a young self-portrait artist she was in high demand all year. She was featured in several galleries and magazines throughout the year! Needless to say she is my biggest inspiration – my dear muse!
Many evenings was spend with friends enjoying the sun as it went down, sipping wine and sharing deep conversations.
I went to London with Mr. dj. His company was nominated for the retail innovation of the year award at the World Retail Awards 2012. At the award show Mr. dj and I were the only two danes present among about a thousand people from all over the world. 80% of the participants were men in tuxedo.
The event was held in the beautiful old building of The Royal Courts of Justice – which reminded me of a large church. They had lit the building up with colorful light and it made it very magical. We had a lot of nice food and wine, chatted with some kind business men (I think I was the only wife at the award show…not kidding!) and enjoyed the international atmosphere.
We did not come back home with the award but the fact that a little danish company was nominated in the most prestigious category – up against world famous brands such as Walt Disney, Tesco and MC Donalds, was a huge acomplishment. So we left London with BIG happy smiles on our faces
Every September my friend D and I take a trip to a wonderful historic little town called Ebeltoft. I know this place very well because I used to spend all my summer vacations there as a child. My grandparents had a magical place in the hills located next to the town.
Ebeltoft is know especially for glass art and ceramics, it´s historic houses, the sealife, handmade goods and old-fashion restaurants with great food! I´m embarrassed to say that D and I eat the same place every time, we order the same meal, and sit at the same table – and that´s not all, we have the same waitress every time too! What can I say, D and I are fan of traditions – good traditions
My oldest daughter Maja moves to London to challenge herself to grow as an artist. It was hard to say goodbye and the first few weeks was hard to get through for both of us. But luckily she quickly settled and now she loves living there.
In the middle of october Mr.dj took off on one of his beloved mountain climbing adventures. He has this idea to climb a new mountain every year – an idea not many people understand…because it´s dangerous and extremely hard to do. Previously he has climbed Mont Blanc, Aconcagua and Kilimanjaro. This year the goal was to climb Carstensz pyramid in New Guniea, Indonesia. Unfortunately the team never got through to the mountain, they got stuck in the jungle, due to a war between the local cannibals!!! Luckily we got him back home in one piece! But this also means that he will go back there in 2013 to try again….
I support him in his adventures even though I´m always extremely scared that something will happen to him. I support him because I believe that fear should never stop you from reaching for your dreams. Holding him back, would not do anyone any good. If you love someone set them free, right!
2012 was a year where many mountain climbers lost their lives – especially on Mont Blanc, France. My heart goes out to their families….
While Mr. dj was traveling the kids and I took off to Tenerife, Spain. It was wonderful to leave the cold and rainy october weather in DK and just relax in the sun. The best thing about the vacation was seeing how much the kids enjoyed each others company. I feel so blessed to have such loving and caring kids – they teach me how to be a better person!
Two of my dear friends and I took a road trip to a small island called Møn. Møn is known for it´s amazing nature and I was not disappointed! Everywhere I looked the nature took my breath away. We stayed with some wonderful people and every minute of this mini vacation was a treat. We meditated, got some hardcore therapy and coaching, went on some long walks and laughed like never before. November was truly a celebration of friendships!
November is also Movember. During the month of November each year, Movember asks men across the world to grow a moustache with the aim of raising vital funds and awareness for men’s health issues. For the first time my son Marco was able to join and he did. Such a cute sight for mommy to look at
After a busy year I wanted to slow down and reflect about my life and the new year to come. My reflections turned into a series of blog posts called Setting Your 2013 Goals. (which I´ll finish up during the next couple of days). I know many of my readers are doing the 24 steps with me and I´ve received so many personal emails from women and men all around the world, sharing their personal thoughts, dreams and goals with me. I treasure every personal connection in my heart and I wish you all the best!
Marco turns 14 on december 9. I can´t really comprehend the fact that my youngest has grown so much – it´s official he is now taller than Mr. dj! Once again I´m challenged as a mother to accept the change. I still want to hug and kiss….but the kids…well not so much anymore…oh dear… Marco´s biggest wish is a new lens for his camera and after saving for months, he´s finally able to buy it for his own money. He´s passion for photography has grown so much this year and I find myself peeking over his shoulders to learn new things
Camilla starts playing the piano again after a year of silence and I enjoy how her music fills up our house again while I´m preparing for all the holiday activities.
Maja comes home from London and my sister in law comes home from Rome. Finally we are all united and we have the most amazing Christmas together!
New Years eve is celebrated in our house together with a large bunch of happy teenagers, dancing and having fun – oh what a night
To say that 2012 has been an exciting year for me would be an understatement in the extreme. And yet 2013 promises to be even more exciting.
From the bottom of my heart….
Thanks to all my readers, all my students, my facebook, twitter and instagram friends. Thanks to all the talented girls I´ve worked with during the year – in front off as well as behind the camera! Thanks to all my amazing clients and costumers. Thanks to everyone who let me photograph them! Thanks to all my friends and connections – online and offline. Thanks to my wonderful kids, my dear old dog Simba and the love of my life; Mr. dj!
